BANKS & TREASURY

FX Pricing Research for Banks & Treasury in MENA

Scope customer FX pricing research for UAE and GCC banks and treasury teams: comparable transactions, rate margins, channel differences and decision criteria.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

For a bank or treasury study, define the customer transaction before comparing the price. Keep wholesale reference context separate from customer quotes, and compare the full known cost on a consistent basis.

Start with the customer journey

Consider two practical questions: whether a retail transfer product is competitive, and whether a corporate FX proposition offers the right conditions for its intended users. Both involve currencies, but they are not interchangeable studies. Account eligibility, transaction size and execution arrangements can change what a headline price means.

A scoped study should state whether it concerns retail remittances, small-business payments or corporate FX. It should identify whether the objective is pricing review, product development or market research. It should not use a consumer page as evidence of an institutional execution price.

Define a comparison the product team can use

Specify the source and destination currencies, amount bands and channel. Separate a bank transfer from card funding and a cash payout from account credit. Ask for the disclosed fee alongside the customer exchange rate and the recipient outcome where that outcome can be established. Record unknown components explicitly rather than treating them as zero.

Choose the comparison convention before reviewing results: the same total customer spend or the same exchanged principal. Switching between those conventions midway can make a different product look cheaper without any underlying price change.

Keep market movement separate from product pricing

An observed price difference can reflect a different observation time, a different customer tier or a different product. A like-for-like study should identify these possibilities before attributing a gap to competitive strategy. Compare the relevant reference context separately from the customer-facing offer.

For an internal research discussion, ask which conclusions remain valid when a promotional price is excluded. Also ask whether the comparison still holds at the transaction sizes that matter to the intended customer. These are research questions, not an assertion that an observed rate is available to your organisation.

A first research brief

A useful starting assignment could review one currency corridor, two customer amount bands and clearly separated app and branch journeys. State which decision the findings will inform, which exclusions are acceptable and how unresolved charges should be displayed. Extend the scope only after the first comparison is interpretable.

Prepare the brief with the FX data requirements builder, then confirm coverage and permitted use separately. Public guidance cannot establish an executable rate, a best-execution conclusion or a provider recommendation.
